[UAUG] understanding VPN

When I am at home and connected to my employer's network via VPN, does  
all of my internet traffic get routed through the VPN or just calls  
that apply to that? I always thought that it was only things that  
apply, but it appears to be everything. For example, my IMAP accounts  
do not work when I am at the office due to the tight restrictions on  
the company firewall. When I am at home and connected to VPN they  
don't work either. This is really frustrating. I don't like the idea  
of all of my internet traffic being routed through the VPN.
