I've had good results with software load balancing using relayd.

One potential catch, though: it's for OpenBSD (and in ports on FreeBSD).  I don't think there's a version available for much of anything else.

If you're already running OpenBSD on your firewall, or don't mind running it as your load balancer, then relayd could work out very well for you.  Otherwise, you'll need to look elsewhere.
