In case it's of any help to anyone here, not all rewrites are created 
equal, but this one is quick and painless,  We've found that people tend 
to get themselves all in a loop when trying to redirect without 
affecting subdomains besides www (if they have subdomains on the same 
server as some people do.)  A KB article by yours truly:  301 Redirect 
from non-www to ww -- Without Looping!

I have another article up on permanently redirecting 'extra' domain 
names, which also helps with this sort of thing.
