you can use samba or nfs for the file storage. there are also other network
filesystems that you can use and slap security over them. There are load
balancers that use proxy information too handle the session information. there
are products out there that can do this all for you. Oracle has it built into
their application suite and so does ibm. In my opinion ibm has the best system
out their for this type of solution. the price is high but the quality is far
superior than anything i have used.
You could probably have a simple solution with apache...however, if your site is
getting pounded then you might have some huge network issues. Here are some load
balancers that i have looked into too...cisco, barracuda, and zues. Also when
you start looking at this a home grown solution is probably not the best solution.
