It is possible using background images, but you will have cheat a 
little. You could either

- make 2 background images for each link (normal/rollover): images will 
have to have the corners of their neighbours to keep the trapezoid shape
OR
- make one background image for the whole of the navigation bar (ie the 
non-rollover state) and rollover images for each link that have JUST the 
area that changes colour with a transparent background.
