It doesn't work like that.  PHP can  be used to output XHTML or HTML or
javascript or whatever.

Is xhtml the best to use currently?


A lot of people do now.

this code prints everything after my greater than sign.


Worked fine for me.  PS I don't think you need the () with echo.  You can
just type
echo 'whatever';
