but you're changing the actual attributes of the file...I don't  
consider that compression...compression to me would be taking the  
same identical file and making it a smaller filesize without changing  
it's physical size or quality.  Optimizing is more what you are  
describing and anytime (I'd hope) you decrease an image's physical  
size or quality of course you'll get a smaller filesize, some  
programs do it better than others.  As you pointed out PS is great at  
it...some other popular programs are not so great at it.
