Oh, you can really compress them down.

If I take a 2 MB JPG photo, resize it to 400 pixels wide, and then  
save it full quality, it is 176 KB. Then, if I save it half quality  
(still good enough that you don't see any difference) it's 112 KB.  
But if I use Photoshop's save-for-web utility, set to high (60 out of  
100), it's only 20 KB.
