But... Smarty DOES make things easier to read and maintain, that is the 
entire point of it... and would writing or learning a whole framework 
take less time than learning all, what, 20 Smarty functions? The analogy 
police are on their way...



Sean, my advice to you is to go ahead and use whatever tools you feel 
comfortable with. Some people will tell you that every PHP project must 
begin with rolling your own custom MVC framework with a homebrew ORM 
layer and ACLs and perhaps even a flux capacitor. But if you listen to 
them your project will probably never even get off the ground. The 
important thing is to get started. If, after you've implemented some of 
the basic functionality, you decide some sort of framework would be 
beneficial given your particular project and circumstances, it's not 
like the code is written in stone.
