Thanks Ray, that's almost exactly what I was looking for. :)

I'd like to be able to close the view instead of just minimize it, but
it doesn't look like there's an option for that.  I did find that in
the key bindings you can create bindings to show specific views, so I
make a key binding to show the navigation view, and one to minimize
it.

I can't believe it took me so long to switch to Eclipse.  :)
