In addition to a separate directory (I'm envisioning a contact list, with
photos?), you could also use the/a photo to "decorate" posts written by
registered members, that way, the face and name go together with the writting
(like on a Planet) and help us all correlate names with faces much more
quickly.
I think I remember there being a WordPress plugin to do just that, but I'm not
sure.

It's not just that, but also to control who can post. Your account is used to
identify who authored an article or a page, as well as for comments. For
example, registered, approved users can comment without moderation, but all
other commenters could be moderated.
An account isn't required to be able to "control" comments, but it will take
some load of of those who have to deal with moderating.
