Here's an interesting article from Joel Spolsky on "language wars".   
He says debating which programming language to use for a web  
application is fruitless IF you choose one of the safe languages:  
PHP, Java, C#, or Python.  Excluded from the list were Perl, Lisp,  
and Ruby [on Rails].

"These debates are enormously fun and a total and utter waste of  
time, because the bottom line is that there are three and a half  
platforms (C#, Java, PHP, and a half Python) that are all equally  
likely to make you successful"
