It's great when people are right to the point :)  Actually, I too 
couldn't find any compelling reason to using SMARTY and thought I might 
be missing something.    Adding another complex syntax layer just makes 
programs harder to maintain.  Perhaps some day there will be a true PHP 
visual designer and then the template stuff might be under the hood.
