As someone who has taught continuting ed at UNLV, I can say that  
reading from a book is not effective for a lot of people. Verbally  
regurgitating functions and concepts doesn't make things any clearer  
either. It's not the basic concepts, it's the implementation where  
people get hung up. A speaker should try to de-mystify the concept's  
implementation, by using a real-life, practical example. They have to  
know why it's important to use, and that it can be easy to do. If  
everyone can take one PHP concept, and do an implementation, that's a  
huge success.
