I may not be the best person to be responding here.  I am not in a large
 corporation, not really enterprise, and most of my projects are not
collaborative.

However, IMHO monster project management applications with more features
than you could read the documentation for in your lifetime is totally
the wrong track.  Usually, one should take a conservative inventory of
the features you absolutely need.  Don't get too crazy, like fancy
graphs, charts, and reports.

I personally take project management to extreme simplicity.  Break down
the project into phases or sections, and then again into individual
tasks.  Then assign tasks as necessary.  Leave it to the assignee to
complete the tasks.  I personally just use a simple Outliner tool, but a
spreadsheet or text file would do just fine.

If you want to get really collaborative, BaseCamp which you linked to
looked really great.  Simple, yet really effective.  I absolutely love
their Backpack product.
