Wade,

This was a subject we covered in one of my Masters Degree courses at the
University of Phoenix.  Everyone but me thought MS Project is the best
because most companies that use enterprise-class project management use
Microsoft Project.  Microsoft Project does have a web-based interface,
many consider MS Project (not necessarily it's web interface) the
industry standard for project management software.  I disagreed with my
classmates for the same reason you dislike SimplyPM - of course, MS
Project is all proprietary, and probably just as dependent on Active X
and IE as SimplyPM.  Some info here:

If the business you want to use project management software for uses
Windows and MS Office, you can also use Outlook for many project
management tasks.

OpenOffice.org is slowly building a competitive product, but it's at
least alpha, if not pre-alpha.  Info here:
