So it looks like the meeting this month (Thurs. Nov. 16, 7pm) is on
Database Design, and that I'll be presenting it. So I'd like to ask for
some input as I go about preparing for our discussion.
1. Are there any particular areas of database design that you'd really
like to know more about?
2. How much do you think you know about good database design?
3. I'm thinking about doing one or more case studies based on real (or
semi-real) situations. Would that interest you? Would you have a situation
we could study?
Feel free to answer to me directly or to the list. Either one is fine with
me. I'll tell you right now that I won't be able to please everyone, but
I'll give it a shot. I'll also warn you that while I understand the
importance of the theory behind database design, I also feel that the
theory isn't as important as the practical issues involved. So I'll be
approaching it from the standpoint of using the information in practice
and knowing how to evaluate the options as they apply to each situation.
Comments and suggestions are welcome, as always.
Before someone asks, yes, I'm most familiar with MySQL, so if I use any
actual SQL code, it will probably be MySQL. But the stuff I discuss should
apply to almost any database engine, modulo the set of supported features
in said database engine.
Thanks,
Mac
