I also noticed an annnouncement with Novell and Micro$oft, about MS
trying to play nice with Linux. I was really struck by the odd look on
Balmer's face, like the groom at a shotgun wedding. Just like the Zend
thing, the only thing that makes sense to my mind is two things.

1) Stop the bleeding of LAMP encroachment, as the Windows Server/IIS
combo is losing very badly. This announcement will possibly freeze
movement for a few weeks, as MS IT zealots will be calling meetings to
explain why they should hold off on moving to LAMP.

2) If you can't beat PHP, and can't get people to adopt ASP/C#, try to
at least make PHP work on a Windows Sever.

I don't think their heart is really in this. This is not a move from
strength. This feels like a timeout to stop the other team's momentum
(sorry, watching footbal). I don't go as far as saying MS is bad, they
are just acting like a large multi-national coproration looking out
for their own interests. In this case, saving every license they can,
before losing them. I just can't bring myself to feel sorry for them.
