Stay away.  Stay far, far away.

Longer response:
It's okay if all you want is exactly what it offers out of the box
(which, to be fair, is fairly extensive.)  If you want to modify
ANYTHING (that's not already offered as a community mod) then don't
use it.  I speak as someone who has modified oscommerce extensively.
You may also want to look at zen cart ( http://zencart.com/ ) which is
based on oscommerce but is (supposedly) much much better.
