I would argue that using layers, you add a third dimension: depth.  Layers
can be stacked on top of each other, arranged in whatever way you want, thus
allowing for a much more flexible layout than a structured table.

Then again, for all I know, you meant to say "think three dimensionally",
and it was just a typo.
