I have had extensive experience with POS systems and you can spend as little
or as much as you want on touch screens, magnetic stripe readers and bar
code scanners. All can easily be attached to a kiosk size PC. Touch
screens do not and will not have any problems with web based apps. In fact,
it would probably be easier for someone experienced in web design to create
larger buttons and links (which is what is usually done for touch screens)
using PHP. There are a lot of places you can Google for POS stuff. IBM and
NCR have the biggest (and most expensive) selection of ideas. But there are
all kinds of equipment and interfaces available. There may already be some
pieces that you could plug in that are already done. I don't have much time
to do any research now, but anything that has to do with POS systems and
Kiosk POS systems I think would help and open up a whole world (or can of
worms) of resources that you could use. Hope this helps.
