In General, I'd say it depends on the site and the content. If you've
got a site that needs semi-hi-res photos, like a photgraphers's site,
or or a site with Flash multimedia, a minute or two on dialup is not
out of bounds. Obviously optimizing images matters.
One thing I've seen that can make things longer is having so much
content on one page, that you have to scroll like a madman. I've seen
lots of image galleries or news pages that are one page that's
ridiculously long. Of course, the former usually has the added benefit
of NOT optimizing images.
So a good measure is how long will you wait for a page before it feels
excessive to you. I'll have more patience when enough has been
downloaded to peak my interest visually. But there's a point where
breaking it up is nice. It also allows a more focused page for SEO. So
I'd say if you're not exactly sure, put on your SEO hat, and see if
the content doesn't also let you know when to say when.
