You should read some of the books on this, especially by Michael 
Cusimano - Netscape lost their competitive advantage by trying to write 
everything in Java, and having to write a lot of java structure 
themselves since the language wasn't that far advanced yet.   They 
insisted on doing everything their own way - yes, not invented here.   
MS of course took advantage of the mistake to kill them.
