Maybe I am not the norm but I am fine with the recruiter taking a bit
of the pie.  They do provide a good service for someone who is looking
for quick work.

I have hired a few developers from recruiting firms in the past and
they are a great resource to find someone with skills x,y, and z that
can start tomorrow.

That being said, the only downside I have experienced while using
recruiting companies is once you interview or phone screen their
candidate they (generalization) hound you to death to the tune of
buying a car.
