Yes, shared hosting is much less secure. There are 3 types of dedicated
hosting usually.
Colocate - You own and manage the server, but use their bandwidth.
This is good for easy migration to other hosts (unplug and move).
Requires you to be your own sysadmin.
Upfront cost of machine, plus monthly hosting
Dedicated - They own the server, but you manage it.
Much cheaper
Fairly easy to migrate (backup, and restore)
Still requires sysadmin duties
Managed - They own and manage a dedicated server for you.
Costs a little more usually
Possibly difficult to move, depending on your apps
Some providers have restrictions as what you can/can't do
Free to develop, no more sysadmin stuff
