[UPHPU] colocated vs dedicated servers

After following up on Richard Miller's suggestion and buying PHP
Essential Security (which really is an excellent book), the book really
frowns upon shared hosting.  I would like some advice from those of you
who have set up small business web servers for PHP apps - have you
recommended dedicated (which I assume the host owns the equipment and
user adds software) or co-located (which I assume means the user's
equipment and software - just the host's facility and connection.  Thks
for any suggestions.
