Hear, hear! If it weren't for the outrageous "Microsoft tax," I wouldn't get to know you guys in this forum.

In 2002, I was dot-Netting and proposed some basic, database-driven web sites at my work. The next week, the proposal for the costs for licenses (on 4-processor servers), etc., for MS SQL was approaching $80,000! The big boss said, "No way. I knew this guy at my old firm that used something called PHP and MySQL..."

At first, I thought PHP was toy. But after 4 years, I haven't looked back.

Finally, with the occasional modicum of technical advantage in using the MS empire, it's rarely worth the price difference. I'd give LAMP the Pepsi Challenge vs. MS regarding costs and tech specs any day.

Funny how you didn't mention the price of each one. Or R&D costs, or
throughput costs , or any other costs that occur in any kind of project.
With pgsql, you control the costs. With the other one, MS sucks you dry
for the rest of your (business) life. I agree it's a pretty good product.
But I'm not willing to pay all of that $ to MS just because they finally
got it right! (Sorry if flames lept up into my post there).
