I recommend rsnapshot. It uses SSH (for remote stuff), rsync, and hard 
links to keep a full backup plus as many incrementals as you'd like. I've 
loved it ever since I found it. It is incredibly simple, and will work on 
files, databases, or whatever, because it has hooks that let you run any 
command you want, then it will back up the resulting files from the 
command, as if they were just regular old files.
