I agree about the wording in the url being a bit more dependent on the  
search engine. It's either Google or Yahoo that doesn't care. MSN, it  
helps.

It's no secret that if you have a local business, your location should  
be prominent in your page content. Google is a great example, where  
they are often showing "local results" at the top, even for a generic  
search. To get in those, first you should have local names in your  
content, obvious. Second, you can register in their local business  
listings here:

https://www.google.com/local/add/login?hl=en-US&gl=US

While it only mentions maps, in practice it cross-links you into local  
results, beyond just maps. Google is looking for local content  
wherever they can find it, and they use this to fill up the results.  
It may have changed, but the last time I used it, you didn't even need  
to have a website, just local business info. Pretty nifty.
