If you want a specific example, WordPress does exactly what you are  
wanting to do. (I would venture that a good amount of the sites that  
you are using as examples are WordPress sites.) So, if you get lost,  
downloading a copy of the WordPress code and dissecting it will give  
you something you could just cut and paste.

Thanks, I will take a look at WordPress.  I prefer to know why something
works then just copying and pasting code.  I'm not saying I don't
liberate code from other projects, just that I like to know what it is
doing.
