I recommend WordPress (www.wordpress.org) if you're going to run
your own blog on either your own server or a hosting service.
(It's also the system I use for my blog.) Also, while the
default theme is pretty good, you may want to check out some
available alternatives, like the ones at vanillamist.com and
http://www.alexking.org/software/wordpress/themes/blog/.
Another option that's been fairly popular is Moveable Type. I'm
a bit less enamored of that one because of licensing issues, but
you may find it to be a good fit.
Finally, to be honest, there's a lot to be said in favor of
systems like Blogspot and TypePad. I assume you've considered
your options, though, and decided that you have valid reasons not
to use one of those.
