It depends on your definition of ugly.  If you are running in a Windows
environment, it is definitely ugly! (But that's only because it started out
ugly).  In the nix world, you can write PHP, Perl or even shell scripts to
check processes or output files or database tables or whatever.  If you
know C++, you could write a separate process that monitors what you want
that is multi-threaded.  All nix versions have IPC (shared memory, message
queues, and semaphores) which are grossly underused.  Distributing the
processing and communicating between processes is what nix was made for.
