Source Code Control

Does anyone use 
1) a Source Code Control app for PHP development?
2) a SCC client/editor with php highlighting?
3) a web host that makes it easy to run an SCC server?

I've been looking into subversion[1] all afternoon. I'm concerned that
I will not be able to install it at my current host. Seems that
Linode[2] (Recently referenced here) whould be a good host for this
type of application. I recently moved hosting to WestHost[3]. They
give a good service, but stop short of full root access.
