Session Buildup

I have been experimenting with sessions, and have noticed that even after expire time I have set for the sessions (using session_cache_expire), the session files are not disappearing.  Do these session files ever get cleaned up or will they continue to build up so my website will have hundreds of files named something like (sess_a29f3f3731ac1ca6324a45146cfc0704)?
