Mailing list archives now searchable

Saturday, 5 November 2005 @ 3:13

We are happy to report that the archives are now searchable. Using an implementation of Google’s site-only search we found on PLUG’s website for inspiration, we have implemented search fields on the mailing list page that allow you to search Google’s cache of the archives. A neat benefit to this search is that it is narrowed to each list’s archives only, keeping results completely relevant.

UPHPU welcomes its 400th member!

Tuesday, 27 September 2005 @ 16:37

I am excited to announce that our four-hundredth member has just registered with the group! We have doubled our membership in the past eight months. If you recall, I sent out an announcement at the close of 2004 announcing the registration of our two-hundredth member. We are continuing to grow and increase the reach of our efforts. News of our articles and activities continue to get picked up by high-profile PHP news sites and to be contacted by renowned PHP and open-source speakers asking for the opportunity to present at our meetings.

As always, I would like to encourage everyone to participate actively in the group and to take advantage of all of the excellent resources that we have brought together, including:

  • Our website. We provide the latest news on PHP, LAMP, any web development. Interact with other members with forum-style commenting and polls. Contribute content by submitting articles and links.
  • Our syndication services. We provide RSS and iCalendar feeds, allowing you to an additional medium to stay abreast of current events, news, and stories.
  • Our Mailing lists. Subscribe to our mailling lists, where we discuss current events, technical topics, and assist each other with questions and personal tasks. We also have lists for job announcements and general group announcements.
  • Our presentations. We host monthly meetings where we have presentations and training sessions on PHP and applicable web development topics.
  • Our library. The UPHPU has a library full of reference and training manuals on subjects relating to and/or about PHP, MySQL, Linux, Apache, and many other topics. Members may check any of our titles free of charge.

We hope that you find our group valudable and that we together may continue to find greater success by our skills and knowledge. We look forward to seeing everyone Thursday night.

2005 BBQ

Thursday, 21 July 2005 @ 1:20

In regards to our 2005 BBQ being held at Fairmont Park on August the 12th at 6:00pm (we’ll fire up the BBQ around 7:00), please RSVP to Mac Newbold (contact information on the mailing list) and let him know what dish you plan on bringing down with you so we can make sure we’re not top heavy with any one food. Dave seems to be a hard man to get a hold of, so it doesn’t look like I’ll have the chance to try some of his homemade root beer, however, Josh “dataw0lf” Simpson has volunteered to take care of drinks for us.

It’s right by the 700 E exit of I-80. If you’re coming from I-15, you’ll get off at 700 East, take a left (under the overpass) and turn right at the first street (Ashton Ave.). You’ll go two blocks, and then go across 900 E right into the parking lot of Fairmont Park. We have the Main Grove Bowery reserved from 6pm-10pm, which is just directly east of the parking lot on the other side of the skate park. There’s plenty at the park for the whole family. If you’d like to bring a frisbee, football, soccer ball, horseshoes, or something else, they’ll probably get used.

UPHPU Eclipse Linux release

Friday, 24 June 2005 @ 4:00

If you have been lurking on the #uphpu irc channel then you have probably heard me talking about the eclipse IDE with others and especially the arch enemy of it, dataw0lf.

eclipse_uphpu_splash_1.jpg

However, in the spirit of friendship I have create a special version of eclipse for linux gtk that has removed all the java libraries and have replaced them with Colorer, PyDev, Ruby-eclipse, and Perl EPIC. Basically, I stripped out all the excess and put in the killer stuff. I also added FTP and WebDav support, CVS support, and SFTP support. This IDE will allow you to manage multiple projects and in various languages, not to mention it is half the size it was. I will be writing up some articles on how to use UPHPU Eclipse for PHP and other development like Python and Ruby. If you have heard me talk about eclipse and want to give it a try you can download it here. I will be adding a windows and mac version to when time permits. If you run into any issues or would like too added some additional plugins like subversion or c/c++ then shoot me a message on the #uphpu channel.

Announcing the Phlyte framework project

Wednesday, 15 June 2005 @ 19:17

Our group project to build a framework finally has a name: Phlyte (pronounced like the word “flight”). It emphasizes the goal of our framework to be lightweight, not too complex, flexible, and easy to use.

I would invite anyone who is interested to subscribe to the new mailing list. Our in-person meetings that will occur probably 2-3 times per month are important, but not strictly required. Participation in the IRC channel at #uphpu or #phlyte on irc.freenode.net is highly encouraged. Subscribing to the mailing list is pretty much required.

A big part of Phlyte development will be about teaching each other how to be better developers, especially with PHP (and Python, for those helping with the Python version of Phlyte). Most of this will happen in the meetings and in team meetings, so it is important that everyone participate as much as possible.

Thanks to everyone who has participated so far, and I look forward to working with each of you more in the future!

Additional meetings and training courses considered

Friday, 15 April 2005 @ 20:42

We are condering some new ideas and events to increase group participation and skills. Please take a moment to vote. We are very interested in feedback from the group and nonmembers alike.

First, we are interested in knowing what individuals are looking for in our montly presentations? Are you satisfied or are could you use more? Why do you come? Why don’t you come? What would bring you out more often? Would you like to meet more than once a month?

Second, we are considered sponsoring monthly or even semi-monthly training courses. Please let us know if this is something that you could benefit from and would be interested in. How much would you be willing to pay? The cost of these would be minimal and would for the most part be only to cover production costs.

Thanks for everyone’s interest and participation!

Server purchased, final call for donations

Monday, 7 February 2005 @ 3:27

The generosity and support that pours out to our group never ceases to amaze me. Once again, in our hour of need, some of the most wonderful and unexpected individuals have stepped up and taken care of us, often even before we realized we needed it.

We would like to take a moment to report on the progress of our project and to publicly thank everyone that has so graciously contributed. To-date, we have received almost a hundred dollars in donations from our members. I am thrilled to announce that with this a server has been purchased. Installation and configuration is nearly complete and it will be online very shortly. We have been able to acquire hardware that will serve us well for some time. Several offers for donated or subsidized rack space and bandwidth have also been given. The invitation from UVNet has been selected and we will begin calling their data center in Orem our new home within a few days. We have also received much assistance in planning, preparation, and execution of the overall project from local businesses, organization, members, and friends of the group.

Specifically, we would like to thank the following for their support or donations:

Adam Olsen, Beau Scott, Brady Mitchell, Computer Admin, LLC, Fluidtiger.com, Gary Thornock, Jared Smith, Jonathan Duncan, John Anderson, Ken Williams, Lonnie Olson, Mac Newbold, Ray Hunter, Twin Peaks Technology, LLC, UVNET, Inc., Webpipe.net, Inc., XMission.

We would also like to announce that UVNet has just been selected as an additional official mirror for php.net! We are thrilled about this new formed friendship, excited about their interest in our group and PHP, and look forward to working with them in the future. We encourage everyone to recommend them to clients and to look to them for any collocation or ISP needs that you may have.

In conclusion, we thank everyone for the outpouring of support and for the wonderful community that we have. Please take a moment to send in both your donation (if you have not yet and would still like to do so) and your comments on ideas you have for the group or ways in which we can better serve you.
